Technology - Network Administration: Courses for the troubleshooting problem solver
If problem solving and computers are two of your favorite hobbies, then consider a technology career in network administration.
Most courses in network administration teach students how to configure, monitor, debug and troubleshoot computer networks such as local area networks (LAN) and TCP/IP networks. Specific topics include Internet Protocol routing, Domain Name System, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, and how to work with firewalls. Students will learn the mechanics and application for different operating systems such as wireless, UNIX, LINUX, Solaris 10, and Cisco.
The following are examples of possible classes students may encounter in their program: Principles of Networking, Client-Server System Administration, Microsoft Windows Server, Windows Active Directory, Open Source Operating Systems, Cisco Networking Fundamentals and Routing, Linux Administration and Project Management.
Specific coursework depends on your ultimate career goals and whether or not you want to specialize. For example, if you want to manage the networks for an organization, you will most likely need a master’s degree and extensive work experience. However, there are many other pathways into the field that combine work experience and education (from a short-term certificate program up to a Master’s degree.)
Possible degrees include:
