How to Get the Job You Want - an Interview with author Frank Madero

Frank Madero

An Interview with Frank Madero

Frank Madero is a published author - commissioned by New Holland Publishers to write two books - The Résumé Guide & How To Get The Job You Want. His experience in senior management and business development roles, together with his natural talent to assess recruitment processes has helped him play a very important role in the success of many business leaders, managers and individuals across Australia and internationally.

What role does education play in helping an individual get the job he wants?

Frank Madero : Knowledge is power – there is no question that a good education provides an individual with a definite advantage.

Besides having the right educational qualifications, which is the other most important factor which determines an individual’s success in a job interview?

Frank Madero: Two other factors are equally important – Likeability and Attitude.

Likeability: Although some recruitment purists will say that it should not be as important a factor when it comes to staff selection, human nature is such that we will always lean toward someone we like, that is, individuals with whom we feel we can get on with or we think will best fit within our workplace.

Attitude: Nobody likes a ‘Smart Alec’ so even though an individual may have the appropriate formal qualifications, his/her attitude toward the new workplace, colleagues and the job itself will be critical to success or otherwise. A key component of most decision-makers’ assessment is whether or not a candidate would be prepared to learn, adjust, fit in and contribute.

In your book “How to Get the Job You Want”, you talk about developing “winning job-search documents”. Please explain the role of these documents in the job search process and provide some tips on how to make them.

Frank Madero: Astute job seekers have impeccable job-search documents. After all, these documents form a critical component of the total ‘package’ and will generally be their first chance to make a first impression. Any job seeker, from recent graduate through to seasoned professional should spend the time, energy and the financial investment, to acquire the best possible set of job-search documents – résumé, application letter and follow-up letter. Most people, regardless of their writing skills, cannot write about themselves effectively and I strongly recommend that they seek out professional, experienced résumé writers. Taking shortcuts with your job-search documents should not be an option – consider this: Would you buy cheap second-hand tires for your new sports car?

Many times after working in a particular field for many years, one feels stuck in his current job and wants to change his field. How easy is such a transition? How can one ensure success in such a case?

Frank Madero: It’s not always easy but there are Career Coaches who specialize in this field and can certainly make an enormous difference for those changing careers. It can also be quite daunting for many, however, life is a gamble and we don’t always get it perfectly right first time round – in fact not many people do and there’s no guarantee of success.

My personal philosophy on this subject comes from the Dale Carnegie quote: Take a chance! All life is a chance. The man or woman who goes farthest is generally the one who is willing to do and dare.

Are professional career services really helpful in identifying and getting the job that one really wants?

Frank Madero: Career Coaches can be very helpful even for those who have been successful in their job-search previously. Successful sports people recognize the difference that coaches can make so professional career services are definitely a worthwhile option for the serious job seeker.
