Restaurant Management

With the growth in the economy and the process of globalization, the percentage of people traveling for leisure or business has gone up and this has had a very positive impact on the hospitality industry. With the hotels, resorts, and restaurants, growing in number there has also been a corresponding rise in the demand for good restaurant management professionals to manage them.

A Career in Restaurant Management:

If you enjoy a dynamic, people-oriented work environment, then restaurant management is the job for you. The duties of a restaurant manager would include:

  • Planning menus
  • Synchronizing kitchen and dining room activities
  • Adhering to sanitation, nutrition and licensing guidelines
  • Accounting and purchasing food, equipment and supplies
  • Developing work schedules and managing the restaurant staff
  • Upkeep of equipment and facilities
  • Managing restaurant employees and hiring new ones
  • Welcoming restaurant guests
  • Book-keeping

Besides this, you may have to effectively deal with problems like stealing of food, money, or restaurant equipment by staff members or customers, customer dissatisfaction with the service or the food, staff dissatisfaction resulting in poor service and food preparation, bad or late supplies and more.

These days many restaurants use computer technology for managing orders, inventory of food ingredients and suppliers, customer seating, sales, work schedules, payrolls and equipment, light and alarm systems. So knowledge of computers would be an added advantage.

Degree in Restaurant or Hospitality Management:

A degree in restaurant and hospitality management provides a strong foundation to take up a career in this field. Several colleges in the US offer programs in restaurant and hospitality management or institutional food service management. You can go in for a bachelor degree, an associate degree or other formal certification in this field. Most programs would provide training on subjects such as nutrition, sanitation, food planning and preparation, as well as in accounting, business law and management, and computer science. Some programs would combine theoretical studies with practical work and internships providing on-the-job experience.

Career Opportunities in Restaurant Management:

As the number of food establishments increase with the rise in population, there will be a growing need for restaurant managers and other related careers. As per the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, "the employment of food service managers is expected to grow about as fast as average for all occupations through 2014....although practical experience is an integral part of finding a food service management position, applicants with a degree in restaurant, hospitality or institutional food service management will have an edge; those with higher-level degrees should have the best opportunities."

Salaries:

As per the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, median annual earnings of salaried food service managers were $39,610 in May 2004. The top 10 percent earned more than $68,860.

Salary as a restaurant managers depends a great deal on your experience level and the type and size of the establishment you work for. The median annual earnings in the industries employing the largest numbers of food service managers in May 2004 were as follows:

  • Traveler accommodation $43,660
  • Special food services 43,530
  • Full-service restaurants 41,490
  • Limited-service eating places 36,400
  • Elementary and secondary schools 36,290
